For many years, rock n’ roll and horror have gone hand in hand. From the early day theatrics of Alice Cooper to the custom monster masks of Slipknot, our death and fear obsessed culture has enjoyed its fusion. Finally, music television network, Fuse and horror magazine, Fangoria have teamed up to honor and celebrate the best in horror based film, music and television by launching the first ever “Chainsaw Awards." The awards show was held Oct. 15th at L.A.’s Orpheum Theatre. As an avid member of the Goth community as well as a known Hollywood starlet, the Chainsaw Awards seemed like the perfect gig for me. Needless to say, when I got the call from the Motor City Deadman (that's me -DN) himself to cover the event, I jumped at the opportunity.
The evening began with the “black carpet” arrivals, which I photographed from my reserved spot amongst television crews, newspapers and paparazzi. One by one, the celebrities arrived each looking more fabulous than the last. The list included Jada Pinkett Smith and her band, Wicked Wisdom, Emmanuelle Vaugier (SAW II,) Jonathan Davis of Korn, Playboy playmate Brande Roderick and The Girls Next Door, Danny Trejo, Bill Moseley and Sheri Moon Zombie (The Devils Rejects,) Rob Zombie, Slipknot, Fall Out Boy, Avenged Sevenfold, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship, The Vincent Black Shadow, Sum 41, Chingy, The Used, 30 Seconds to Mars, Ted Raimi (The Grudge,) Andrew Bryniarski (Leatherface), Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger), Avril Lavigne, Regina Hall (Scary Movie,) Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick(The Omen,) and many more.
The two-hour show was hosted by Jaime Kennedy and kicked off with Slipknot and Leatherface taking to the stage with a chainsaw to present the award for “Most Thrilling Killing” (Best Death Scene.) The award went to Emmanuelle Vaugier for SAW II. Other big winners included The Hills Have Eyes, which won for “Best Make-Up” and “Bloodiest Beat Down” and The Devil’s Rejects, which took home the biggest award of the night for “Killer Movie."
Bill Moseley and Sheri Moon Zombie also took the “Relationship in Hell” (Best Duo) award home for their roles in The Devil’s Rejects. Other interesting categories included “Creepiest Kid”, which went to Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick for his role as Damien in The Omen and “Best Butcher” (Villain) which went to Tobin Bell for SAW II. An entertaining moment was when Rob Zombie took to the stage to present the “Prince of Darkness” (darkest male in a music video) award, which was won by Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars. The nominees for the category included such new school rock acts as My Chemical Romance and Avenged Sevenfold. “I don’t really see what’s dark about any of them,” Rob said at the podium. “Its like a cross between Dracula and The Fonz.” 30 Seconds to Mars also picked up the award for “Best Video Inspired by a Movie” for the video, “The Kill”. The “Femme Fatale” (evilest female in a video) award went to Avenged Sevenfold for the video, “Beast and The Harlot." Ironically, none of them are female and the actress from the video did not seem present. Finally, The Red Hot Chili Peppers won the award for “Killer Video” for the video, “Dani California." A high-spirited Anthony Kiedis showed up in the pressroom tossing his award high in the air at the delight of the flashing cameras.
After the show, Rob Zombie and I had a little reunion in the pressroom where we reminisced about the time I got arrested in high school for wearing a White Zombie shirt. “Funny, I got all that press back then, and now I am the press,” I told him.
I had the opportunity to snap a few candid shots of Bill Moseley and Sheri Moon as well, who were both as sweet as blood filled cupcakes! Bill Moseley was even so kind as to give Crypt a shout out as he posed for me on the black carpet.
I also got a close look at the new Damien (Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick,) who is in fact kinda creepy in person (which is very ghoul -DN) but not half as creepy as the papparazzi. Being stuck in a room with a bunch of pushy foolish mortal photographers for half the night was the true horrific experience of the night! Argh!!!!!!!!
The Fuse Fangoria Chainsaw Awards will premiere Sunday, October 22 on Fuse, with a half-hour black carpet Dead on Arrival pre-show at 9:30 PM (EST,) followed by the two-hour long awards show at 10 PM (EST.)
