Winds of Plague, Skeleton Witch, Moonspell, Dimmu Borgir, and Danzig

The Fillmore

Detroit, MI

by Tom Damien

I had no idea what to expect from the Blackest of the Black tour. But being a huge fan of Danzig I bought my ticket without thinking twice. They started off with bands like Winds of Plague, Skeleton Witch and Moonspell. Having never heard of Winds of Plague or Skeleton Witch I wasn't sure what they sounded like. As I stood there through both of their sets, I loved it! I'll certainly pay to see these bands again. Their performance was heart pounding. It was also my first time seeing Moonspell live as well. I really get into bands that are mainly instrumental. Don't get me wrong, a song with really great lyrics is a must as well. But a lot can be said through just the music alone.

Dimmu Borgir delivered a haunting performance as I have seen a time or two before. But still really impressive! Danzig hit the stage about around 10:30pm. Starting off with SkinCarver and right into Twist of Cain. Before going into Satan's Crucifiction Glenn let the crowd know that he had a touch of the flu. But it didn't seem to effect his performance one bit. He played some of his greatest songs. There were some of his songs that I would have loved to hear him perform live such as, Crawl Across Your Killing Floor, Cold, Cold Rain and Lick the Blood of my Hands to name afew from his two disc album The Lost Tracks of Danzig that was released last year. But as usual Danzig still never disappoints.

I still got to hear songs like Devils Plaything, How the Gods Kill and Brand New God. I would have LOVED to have had photos to show all of you, but sorry guys no cameras were allowed to be taken into the show. So no luck there! But I think that Glenn Danzig's idea to put together a tour of bands that are constantly ignored by the mainstream was a brillant idea! Much better then the usual crap you get from Ozzfest! And it's all on ONE STAGE! And to me that's more personal and in your face then having a different set of bands on two stages. I for one can't wait for Blackest of the Black to come through next year! I wonder what extremely dark bands Glenn will have instore for us in 2009.
